Mathew Perry, best known for his role as Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom, Friends, died on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at the age of 54.

An inquiry into his death has begun, although sources indicate he may have died of a heart collapse while in a jacuzzi at a Los Angeles property.

Perry was born in 1969 in Williamstown, Massachusetts. In the early 1990s, he began his acting career in modest roles on sitcoms such as Second Chance and Home Free.

He earned the part of Chandler Bing on Friends in 1994, which catapulted him to fame.

Friends aired for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004, and Perry soon rose to prominence as one of the show's most popular actors. He was noted for his acerbic wit and ability to provide physical humour.

Perry continued to act after Friends ended, appearing in series including Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Mr Sunshine. In 2015, he also appeared on Broadway in the drama The Odd Couple.

Perry has been candid about his battles with substance misuse and mental health in recent years. He entered rehab for the first time in 1997 and has since been in and out of treatment multiple times.

In 2021, he published Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, a book in which he detailed his experiences with schizophrenia.
