Victor Osimhen crowned 2023 African Player of the Year

Outshining Liverpool's Mohammed Salah and Egypt's talent Achraf Hakimi from Paris Saint Germain, the Super Eagles' forward claimed the prestigious award, marking the first Nigerian victory since Kanu Nwankwo's triumph in 1999.

Osimhen secured this coveted honour after propelling his club to its first Serie A title in more than three decades, netting an impressive 27 goals across various competitions, adding an electrifying touch to Italian football.

Remarkably, the 24-year-old became Napoli's inaugural top scorer in Italian football since the iconic Diego Maradona's feat in 1987/88.

This victory establishes Osimhen as the initial Nigerian male player since Kanu Nwankwo in 1999 to secure this accolade, further solidifying his impact. His goals were instrumental in Napoli's unexpected Serie A victory, a triumph that few anticipated at the onset.

Adding to Nigeria's celebration, Asisat Oshoala of Barcelona secured the Female Player of the Year title, marking her record sixth win after a stellar role in Barcelona's Champions League conquest. The 29-year-old striker surpassed South Africa's Thembi Kgatlana and Zambia's Barbara Banda to retain her well-deserved crown.
